California area codes
The table below lists every active California area code with its coverage, service date and prefix count. 33 of the 41 codes are overlays — added on top of existing territories as numbers ran short.
Geographically the map reads: 213 (Los Angeles:da 01), 310 (Compton:gardena Da), 323 (Los Angeles:da 14), 714 (Anaheim), 805 (Santa Barbara), 909 (Ontario), 408 (San Jose:west Da), 619 (San Diego:san Diego Da), with 31 more codes covering the rest of the state. Each code page lists its full coverage down to individual rate centers.
16 overlay complexes operate in California: 209/350, 213/323/738, 279/916, 310/424, 341/510…. Inside a complex the codes share territory and local calls take ten digits.
Since 2010 the state has gained 11 codes: 669 (2012), 628 (2015), 279 (2018), 820 (2018), 341 (2019), 840 (2021), 350 (2022), 369 (2023), 738 (2024), 837 (2025), 357 (2025).
Every California code keeps Pacific time.
Capacity watch: 626 (exhaust 1Q 2030), 657 (exhaust 2Q 2028), 714 (exhaust 2Q 2028), 949 (exhaust 3Q 2029) are closest to needing relief, per NANPA projections.
Note that toll-free codes (800, 833, 844, 855, 866, 877, 888) sit outside this list — they have no geographic tie to California or anywhere else, and are assigned individually from the national SMS/800 registry.
As everywhere in the NANP: these codes say where numbers were issued, not where callers are. Per-code pages break coverage down to rate centers and prefixes.
