Scam calls that display a Boston-area 857 number usually do not originate there. Spoofing lets a caller present any digits, and 857, with its 357 active prefixes, offers plenty of plausible-looking combinations. Below are the documented schemes most commonly reported behind local-looking calls.

Note that Boston numbers may also show overlay codes 617 — a scammer rotating through the 617/857 complex still looks "local".

Neighbor spoofing

A form of caller ID spoofing in which the falsified number matches your own area code and often your NXX prefix, so the call appears to come from a nearby household and feels safe to answer.

The caller claims to be from your electric, gas, or water company and threatens immediate disconnection unless an 'overdue balance' is paid within the hour, usually by prepaid card or payment app.

A caller posing as a sheriff's deputy or court officer says you missed jury duty and a warrant has been issued, but the 'fine' can be paid by phone to avoid arrest.

Are all calls from 857 numbers scams?

No — 357 real prefixes serve Boston subscribers. The point is that the displayed code alone proves nothing either way; judge the call's content and verify independently.

Can I block the whole 857 area code?

Some phones and carrier apps allow prefix-based blocking, but scammers rotate codes (including overlays 617), so blanket blocking mostly costs you legitimate calls. Silencing unknown callers works better.
